the future of “GENOME EDITING” in plant breeding: on wednesday DECEMBER 5, SANT’ANNA school researchers of life sciences institute participate in a WORKSHOP FOCUSING on crispr technologies

The workshop on genome editing in plant breeding “Potenzialità della tecnologia genome editing per la difesa delle piante”, organized by the Accademia dei Georgofili (Committee on Agricultural Biology), and the University of Pisa (Plant and Microbial Biotechnology Dept.) will bring together researchers and experts to examine the potential impact of CRISPR/Cas technologies in plants. Sant’Anna School researchers from the Life Sciences Institute will focus on the genome to face the challenge of providing the world population with food and to support a sustainable agricultural production.

Introducing synthetic artificial genes to generate new plant varieties with desired traits is a versatile technology with unlimited applications. This workshop will therefore provide a unique opportunity for sharing research expertise on the latest genome editing technologies and discuss the genetic improvement of plants with those traits that confer resistance to various biotic and abiotic stresses, better quality and extended shelf life.

Keynote speakers include Francesco Licausi (University of Pisa), Daan A. Weitz (Sant'Anna School) and Laura Dalle Carbonare (Sant'Anna School). Their research activities focus on crop varieties with superior yield characteristics, adaptation responses to oxygen and abiotic stresses, and control mechanisms for abiotic stress tolerance.
